Reuben Whittaker, more James Herriot than James Herriot! A gregarious gentle giant of a Yorkshireman with a kind, sensitive, compassionate nature and a genuine love of animals.

Born in the Yorkshire Dales, his keen interest in nature and the great outdoors provided a natural backdrop for what was to become a deep and lifelong passion for animals and animal health.

A committed family man and father of two sets of twins, Reuben is a natural carer and this makes him the natural choice of vet for anyone who cares deeply about their pets and who prefers the personal touch.

With the rise in frequency of veterinary mergers, making practices larger and more impersonal, Reuben firmly believes that being independent and therefore in charge of his own time, he can provide a personal and compassionate service to his clients taking the time to evaluate and diagnose the problem on the spot using scanners and X-ray equipment from his fully equipped “mobile surgery”. Furthermore, where necessary and safe, he can work on the patient there and then, without the need for time consuming and expensive second visits for X-ray and scanning appointments.

After leaving Liverpool University with a Batchelor’s degree in Veterinary Science in 1997, Reuben joined a mixed practice in South West Wales. Moving back to Yorkshire after two years and then seven more years in a mixed practice gave him the sound grounding upon which he has since become an advanced practitioner. For the last eight years, he has focused solely on equine and also developed a keen interest in Alpacas, having looked after one of the UK’s largest herds for the best part of 10years, including surgeries and dentistry.

Reuben is currently in the process of studying for his second certificate in Equine Dentistry which will see him qualified to carry out all types of dental surgery including the most recent advanced extraction techniques and endodontics (fillings).

As an independent local vet, Reuben is committed to taking the time to really listen to what the clients want and need. He recognises that not all clients’ requirements are the same. He will deal with pre-purchase vettings, lameness investigations, vaccinations, routine dental maintenance and surgery, scanning, fertility issues, x-rays and much more besides.
